A Week on Hooper's Island: A 7-Day Chesapeake Bay Itinerary

A weekend on Hooper's Island is lovely — but a full week is where the place really works its magic. With seven days you can mix big adventures with long, lazy do-nothing afternoons and never feel rushed. Here's a relaxed week-long itinerary you can follow as loosely as you like.

The week at a glance

  • Day 1 — Arrive & settle in. Stock up in Cambridge on the way, unpack, and ease into it with a first sunset from the deck.
  • Day 2 — Crab day. Crab from the shoreline across the road in the morning, then host a steamed-crab feast on the deck that night — the quintessential Bay experience.
  • Day 3 — Day trip: St. Michaels. Spend the day in the Eastern Shore's most charming town — maritime museum, harbor, shops, and lunch.
  • Day 4 — Wild day at Blackwater. Drive the refuge for eagles and birds, then paddle the marsh back home in the afternoon.
  • Day 5 — Do nothing on purpose. No plans. Coffee, a book, a nap, maybe a short drive to the swimming beach, the fire pit at night. This is the day you'll remember.
  • Day 6 — Another adventure. Your pick: a fishing charter, a ferry to Smith Island for cake, a drive to Cambridge, or a bucket-list run to Assateague's wild ponies.
  • Day 7 — Slow morning & depart. One last sunrise coffee on the water before checkout.

Make it yours

The whole point of a week is flexibility, so treat this as a menu, not a schedule. Swap a day trip for a second do-nothing day if the weather's perfect. Bunch the outings early and save the back half for pure rest, or sprinkle them through the week. Match the season, too — a winter week leans into birding and cozy fires, while a summer week is all crabs, water, and long evenings. The house is comfortable enough that "staying in" never feels like settling.

A few week-long tips

  • Big initial grocery run. Stock the kitchen well on day one so you're not running back to Cambridge mid-week.
  • Plan the long day trips around the weather and any ferry or charter schedules.
  • Protect at least one unplanned day — it's the secret to coming home truly rested.
  • Pace the seafood: a crab feast, a fish dinner, an oyster night — spread the good stuff across the week.
