The Perfect 3-Day Hooper's Island Itinerary
Three days is the sweet spot for Hooper's Island: long enough to slow all the way down, short enough to feel like an easy escape. This is a loose, unhurried plan that mixes the water, the wildlife, and the Eastern Shore's deep history — with plenty of room to skip a step and just sit on the deck instead. Adjust it to your group; the island rewards a flexible pace.

Day 1 — Arrive, settle, and a crab feast
Time the drive so you cross the Bay Bridge ahead of the afternoon rush and roll down through the marsh in daylight — the last stretch toward the islands is the trip's first reward. Stop in Cambridge (about 29 miles north) on the way in for a big grocery and supply run, since shopping thins out down-island.
Check-in is 4 PM. Unload, claim bedrooms, and let everyone exhale. For the first night, lean into the most quintessential thing you can do here: a crab feast. Pick up live crabs from a local seafood market just up the road, steam them with plenty of Old Bay, cover the table in newspaper, and let dinner run long. Finish with the sunset over the water — the whole reason you came.
Day 2 — On the water and into the marsh
Morning: Get on the water. The Hoopersville Boat Ramp is about four minutes away, so a morning charter, a few hours of crabbing off a dock, or a paddle through the calm guts and marshes are all easy to pull off. Summer brings blue crabs and panfish; spring and fall bring rockfish; year-round, the herons, ospreys, and eagles put on a show.
Afternoon: Drive up to Blackwater National Wildlife Refuge (about 19 miles). The 3.6-mile Wildlife Drive, the trails, and the visitor center make it easy for all ages and abilities. In winter the refuge fills with snow geese and tundra swans; the rest of the year it's eagles, shorebirds, and big Chesapeake sky.
Evening: Either fire up the grill back at the house with the day's catch, or head to Old Salty's in Fishing Creek — the island's full-service restaurant — for crab cakes and local seafood.

Day 3 — Heritage, Cambridge, and a slow goodbye
Use the last morning for the Eastern Shore's history. The Harriet Tubman Underground Railroad State Park and Visitor Center (about 18 miles, near Blackwater) is free and deeply moving — Tubman was born in Dorchester County, and the self-guided byway threads through the landscape where she lived and led people to freedom.
From there, swing into Cambridge to walk the historic High Street district and the Choptank River waterfront, grab lunch, and browse before the drive home. Check-out is 10 AM, so pack the car first and let the morning be unhurried — or, if you've got a late departure, simply trade all of this for one more slow coffee on the deck. Nobody's ever regretted that choice here.
Tips to make it smoother
- Stock up in Cambridge on the way in. Down-island shopping is limited — get everything for the stay in one trip.
- Book a charter early. If a fishing morning matters, reserve before you finalize dates, especially in the fall.
- Pad for the Bay Bridge. It's the one likely delay on summer weekends — cross at off-peak hours.
- Let the deck win sometimes. The best Hooper's Island days are the ones where you skip a plan and just watch the water.
