Getting to Hooper's Island: Drive Times & Directions from DC, Baltimore & Beyond

The most common question we hear before a trip is some version of "how far out is it, really?" The honest answer: Hooper's Island feels wonderfully remote once you arrive, but it's far more reachable than it looks on a map. If you can get to the Eastern Shore beaches, you can get here — the island just sits a little farther south, down through the marsh. Here's the exact route, realistic drive times, and the one traffic trick that makes the whole trip easier.

The route, in one line

From almost anywhere on the western shore, the drive is the same spine: US-50 east across the Chesapeake Bay Bridge, through Easton, and on to Cambridge. In Cambridge you leave the highway and head south — MD-16 to MD-335, bearing right at the T-junction in Golden Hill. MD-335 becomes Hooper's Island Road and carries you the rest of the way down to Fishing Creek, crossing the bridges between the islands as the water opens up on both sides.

That last stretch — roughly 40 minutes from Cambridge — is the best part of the drive. You pass the edge of Blackwater National Wildlife Refuge, the land flattens into marsh and sky, and the Bay starts appearing in every direction. By the time you reach the house, you've already decompressed.

Approximate drive times

These are planning estimates. The single biggest variable is the Chesapeake Bay Bridge — more on that below — so pad your timing on summer weekends.

FromDistanceTypical drive
Annapolis, MD~60 miles~2 hr
Baltimore, MD~110 miles~2 hr 30 min
Washington, DC~125 miles~2 hr 40 min
Northern Virginia~130–150 miles~3 hr
Philadelphia, PA~150 miles~3 hr 5 min
Cambridge, MD (last big town)~29 miles~45 min

Distances are approximate and times assume normal conditions — confirm with live navigation on travel day, especially around the bridge.

The Bay Bridge trick

The Chesapeake Bay Bridge is the gateway to the entire Eastern Shore, which means on peak summer weekends it can back up — eastbound on Friday and Saturday mornings, westbound on Sunday afternoons. The fix is simple: cross at off-peak times. Roll out early in the morning, mid-day, or in the evening and you'll often sail over with no delay. If your plans are flexible, an arrival that lands outside the Friday-afternoon rush makes the trip noticeably smoother. Check current bridge conditions before you leave on a busy weekend.

Stock up before you go down-island

Hooper's Island is a quiet working community, and shopping options thin out the farther south you go. The move most guests make: do a big grocery and supply run in Cambridge (about 29 miles north, your last full-service town) on the way in. Get everything for the stay — food, drinks, beach and crabbing gear, anything you don't want to drive back for — then settle in. Closer to the house you'll find smaller local markets and the seafood spots, including fresh crabs only a couple of miles away.

Flying in?

The most convenient major airport is Baltimore/Washington International (BWI), which puts you on the western-shore side of the Bay Bridge with a roughly 2.5-hour drive ahead. Washington Dulles and Reagan National are options too, though they add bridge-to-bridge time across the DC area. Whichever you choose, you'll want a rental car — Hooper's Island is a drive-to destination, and having wheels is what lets you reach the boat ramp, the refuge, and Cambridge for dinner.

Make the drive part of the trip

The Eastern Shore rewards an unhurried arrival. If you've got time, break the drive with a stop in Easton or St. Michaels for lunch, or roll into Cambridge to walk the historic waterfront before the last leg. And the final 40 minutes through the marsh toward the islands is worth doing in daylight at least once — it's the part of the trip people remember.

Check-in at The Bayside Escape is 4 PM, so an early start from the city often means arriving right as the house opens, with the whole evening — and the sunset over the water — still ahead of you.
