The Choptank River: The Eastern Shore's Great River

If the Chesapeake is the heart of this region, the Choptank is one of its great arteries. The largest river on Maryland's Eastern Shore winds past Cambridge on its way to the Bay, carrying centuries of history, some of the area's best fishing, and a deep sense of place. Here's what to know about the river just up the road from Hooper's Island.

The Eastern Shore's biggest river

The Choptank is the largest river on the Delmarva Peninsula and on Maryland's Eastern Shore — roughly 71 miles long. It rises up in Kent County, Delaware, then winds southwest through Caroline County and forms much of the boundary between Talbot, Caroline, and Dorchester counties before widening into a broad tidal river that empties into the Chesapeake. Cambridge sits right on its south bank near the river's mouth, and the historic town of Denton lies upstream.

A river steeped in history

This is deeply storied water. The Choptank watershed is the heart of Harriet Tubman country — she was born in the Dorchester County marshes the river drains, and its landscape shaped the Underground Railroad routes she knew so well. In Cambridge, you can visit the Choptank River Lighthouse, a replica screwpile-style lighthouse at the Long Wharf on the waterfront, for a feel of the old Bay navigation era and a lovely view down the river.

On the water

The Choptank is a working and playing river — boaters, paddlers, and anglers all share it. It has long been known for fishing, with white perch, striped bass, croaker, sea trout, and catfish among the regular catches. One landmark to know is Bill Burton Fishing Pier State Park, built from spans of the old 1935 Choptank River bridge and renamed in 2009 for the beloved outdoors writer. Note, though: the piers were closed in 2022 after structural problems were found below the waterline, so check the park's current status with Maryland DNR before planning to fish there.

Experiencing it from the house

Cambridge — about 29 miles from the house — is your gateway to the Choptank. Stroll the revitalized waterfront, see the lighthouse at Long Wharf, watch the boats, and take in the broad river views. It pairs naturally with a Cambridge day trip, an afternoon of fishing or paddling, or simply a scenic drive along the water on your way to and from the island.
