The Smart Grocery Run Before You Reach Hooper's Island

Hooper's Island is beautifully remote, which means one of the best things you can do for your trip happens before you even arrive: a well-planned supply run. Get the big shop done in Cambridge, grab fresh crabs closer in, and know what the General Store can cover for the small stuff. Do it right and you'll spend your days cooking together and watching the water, not making runs back to town.

The big shop: Walmart in Cambridge (~29 mi)

Cambridge is about 29 miles from the house and is your last stop for a full-size supermarket, so this is where the main haul happens. If you're a group filling the full kitchen for the week, plan to do essentially all of your bulk shopping here — pantry staples, drinks, snacks, breakfast supplies, meat for grill nights, and anything you'd hate to drive back for. It's genuinely worth writing a list before you leave home so you're not wandering aisles trying to remember whether you packed coffee filters.

A quick tip for coordinating a crowd: share a running grocery list in your group's chat in the days before the trip, then split it by family or by aisle when you get there. It turns a two-hour ordeal into a fast, divide-and-conquer stop, and you'll arrive at the house ready to unload straight into the fridge.

What the kitchen already has — and what to bring

The kitchen is built for group cooking: a large oven, a gas stove, granite counters, island seating for four, and a full breakfast room. Coffee comes from a Hamilton Beach 2-Way maker — you can brew ground coffee, or empty a K-Cup into the single-serve mesh basket — so bring whichever coffee suits that setup. A couple of things worth putting on your own list because they're the classic "we assumed it'd be here" items:

  • Cooking oil — bring your own; plan for however much your menu needs
  • Sugar — same, bring what you'll use for coffee and baking
  • Coffee to match the Hamilton Beach maker (ground, or K-Cups to empty into the mesh basket)
  • Any specialty spices or ingredients your signature dishes depend on

One more thing to keep in mind while you cook: there's no garbage disposal, so scrape plates into the trash rather than the sink. It's a small habit that keeps the kitchen running smoothly for a big group.

Fresh crabs and seafood: Rippons Brothers Seafood (2 mi)

You don't buy your crab feast at Walmart — you buy it two miles up the road. Rippons Brothers Seafood is the closest source for fresh crabs and local seafood, and picking up steamed crabs (or live ones to steam yourself) is one of the great rituals of a Hooper's Island trip. Because it's so close, we'd save the seafood for after you've dropped your groceries at the house; that way it's as fresh as possible and doesn't sit in a warm car during the long Cambridge shop. Hours and daily catch vary at any small seafood spot, so it's smart to call ahead the day you plan to buy.

The last-minute fixer: The General Store (5 mi)

For everything you forgot, The General Store is about five miles away and is the island's catch-all — supplies, hot food, and, crucially in summer, bug spray. Think of it as your safety net rather than your main shop: it's perfect for the pack of ice you didn't buy enough of, a forgotten condiment, a hot lunch on arrival day, or the mosquito repellent you'll be very glad to have near the marsh at dusk. Knowing it's there takes the pressure off the big run — you don't have to buy every conceivable item in Cambridge if the small gaps can be filled five miles from the house.

Putting the supply run together

Here's the rhythm that works: do the big grocery shop in Cambridge on your way in, stop at the house to unload and get perishables cold, then swing two miles up to Rippons Brothers Seafood for crabs, and lean on the General Store for anything you missed. That sequence keeps your food fresh, your seafood freshest of all, and your vacation free of back-and-forth. With the fridge stocked and a fire pit waiting outside, you've set yourself up for the whole point of coming out here — long, unhurried days with the people you brought.
