A Day Trip to Assateague Island: Wild Ponies, Beaches & Birds
There's nothing else quite like cresting the bridge onto Assateague Island and spotting wild horses grazing in the dunes. It's one of the most memorable things you can do on Maryland's Eastern Shore — and from a base on Hooper's Island, it makes a great big-day outing for families and animal lovers. Here's what to know before you go.

The wild ponies — what's true
Assateague Island is a 37-mile barrier island known for its beaches, its birds, and above all its wild horses (locally called ponies). There are actually two separate herds: a Maryland herd of roughly 78 horses, managed by the National Park Service at Assateague Island National Seashore, and a Virginia herd of about 150 at Chincoteague at the island's southern end. The Maryland side is the one you'll visit on a day trip from here.
These are genuinely wild animals, not a petting zoo. The Park Service requires visitors to stay at least 40 feet away — do not approach, touch, or feed them. They bite and kick, and they can carry disease. Keep your distance, use a zoom lens, and never leave food unattended (they'll help themselves to a cooler or a sandwich in a heartbeat). Respecting that space is what keeps both the horses and the visitors safe.
More than horses
Even if every horse stays out of sight, Assateague delivers. The Atlantic beaches are wide and uncrowded, perfect for swimming, beachcombing, and surf fishing. The island is also a birding hotspot — wading birds, shorebirds, and migrating species work the marshes and dunes, a natural extension of the same Atlantic Flyway that makes Hooper's Island so rich for birders. Short nature trails and the marsh-side bay add up to an easy, varied day outdoors.

Planning the drive
Be realistic about the distance: Assateague sits about 8 miles south of Ocean City, on the far Atlantic side of the Shore. From Hooper's Island that's roughly a two-hour drive each way (out through Cambridge and east on US-50), so this is a full-day, leave-early kind of trip rather than a quick errand. Treat it as the centerpiece of one day of your stay — and you'll come back to the quiet of the Bay that evening.
- Go early. Mornings are cooler, parking is easier, and wildlife is more active.
- Pack for the beach and the sun — water, snacks, sunscreen, hats, and a zoom camera for the horses.
- Check the National Seashore's site for current entrance fees, hours, and any seasonal advisories before you leave.
- Bring bug spray in warm months — the island's marshes are famous for mosquitoes and biting flies.
- Leave the dog plan flexible — pet rules differ across the island, so confirm before bringing one along.

Why it pairs so well with a Hooper's Island stay
A trip like this is exactly why a house with room to spread out beats a hotel. You can do the big Atlantic-beach day at Assateague, then return to a private water-view home where the kids can crash, the cooler restocks itself, and dinner happens around one big table. Bookend the week with quieter days — crabbing from the shoreline across the road, sunsets from the deck, a slow morning with coffee and the marsh — and you get the best of both shores in one trip.
